About

Marcel Dzama: Paintings & Drawings was published on the occasion of the exhibition of same title at Sies + Höke in 2004.

Marcel Dzama has started to cut out his motifs. Girl-guerrillas, child soldiers, armed rabbits have to move from the paper to the canvases. More dyed than grounded or even painted, these canvases are completely abstract, contemplative colour experiments. Two or three dark brown stained strips create a sinister, barren desert landscape, a trace of brilliant blue, as if sprayed onto the canvas, signifies the sky, the ground, on which the cut-out figures are glued, often remains white, as if in a transitory state, a planet, more alien than the moon, might look like this. The light is diffuse, but extremely bright, a sfumato of sepia and light blue, the sky shines threateningly, like sunlight in a thunderstorm.

The publication is accompanied by a text written by Catrin Lorch.
