About
About
Marcel Dzama was published on the occasion of the artist's solo exhibition at Sies + Höke in 2006.
There is a weird mix of innocence and decadence in the work of Marcel Dzama, the kind of psychological alloy that occurs in semi-conscious states. As surreal narrative shifts occur in dreams, especially those that are conjured up just before wakefulness, so too is it impossible to make sense of Dzama's images. We identify with them because they are like the stories we tell ourselves when no one is listening: candid, shameless, childish, vulgar, cruel and tender. Recent work here tends to be more emphatic, even more vivid with its occasional nakedness, militaristic parades and rituals, amputations and ominous passivity, arguably in response to a real world gone wrong.
The publication includes an essay by Lars Bang Larsen.
