About

Ulrich Erben: Festlegung des Unbegrenzten (Defining the Infinite) was published on the occasion of the same titled exhibition at the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop.

With this exhibition of his current paintings Ulrich Erben goes full circle. Chosen from his artistic output of the last three years, the paintings on exhibit embrace topics that have preoccupied him for decades. However, they are ushered into a new dimension through the further development of former emphases. The utterly unique timbre that characterizes these paintings is unmistakable.

The exhibition catalogue is accompanied by essays from Heinz Liesbrock and Heiner Bastian.

Ulrich Erben

Ulrich Erben

Ulrich Erben (b. 1940 in Duesseldorf) is one of the great postwar painters in Germany. Having grown up on the Lower Rhine and in Rome, the vastness of landscape became the starting point for his art. Yet Erben does not paint from nature; his paintings are in the tradition of concrete art, geometric abstraction, and color field painting. Always flooded with light, like windows opened wide, his paintings are compositions of nature and light—and thus nothing less than the essence of painting itself. The artist lives and works in Duesseldorf.
