Ulrich Erben

Ulrich Erben (b. 1940 in Duesseldorf) is one of the great postwar painters in Germany. Having grown up on the Lower Rhine and in Rome, the vastness of landscape became the starting point for his art. Yet Erben does not paint from nature; his paintings are in the tradition of concrete art, geometric abstraction, and color field painting. Always flooded with light, like windows opened wide, his paintings are compositions of nature and light—and thus nothing less than the essence of painting itself. The artist lives and works in Duesseldorf.
