          About
Bare Wunder: Sigmar Polke – 100 Years of Mediumistic and Phantasmagorical Photography is the title of a group show curated by Veit Loers that was shown at Sies + Höke in 2015. The exhibition examined Sigmar Polke’s photographic works, with a focus on the artist’s irony and mysticism. Polke challenged the authenticity of photographs. He explored questions of imitation and authorship through the stylistic use of multiple exposures, overexposes and chemical manipulations of the development process. By creating experimental distortions in his images, he undermined the photographs’ alleged fidelity to reality and covered his works under a veil of mysticism.
Alongside Polke’s own work, the exhibition featured examples of his artistic influencers – among them the so-called ghost-photography -, as well as some of his contemporaries and successors. Artists included are, amongst others, Anna & Bernhard Blume, John Bock, Brassaï, Johannes Brus, Tony Cragg, Walter Dahn, Louis Darget, Daniel Egg, Fischli/Weiss, Martin Kippenberger, Jürgen Klauke, Jochen Lempert, Peyman Rahimi, Man Ray, Gerhard Richter, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Gregor Schneider, Albert von Schrenck-Notzing, Thomas Schütte, Ted Serios, Anton Stankowski, Otto Steinert, Miroslav Tichý, Type 42 (Anonymous), WOLS, Francesca Woodman and Thomas Zipp.
The catalogue published alongside this exhibition, Bare Wunder, features reproductions of 60 photographic works by Sigmar Polke, as well as images of work by more than 40 other artists. The 200 pages of this book also contain essays by Veit Loers and Andreas Fischer.
