About

Sigmar Polke: Photographs 1964 – 1990 is a monographic catalogue of Sigmar Polke’s photographs, published jointly in 2022 by Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf and Kicken, Berlin on the occasion of exhibitions of the same title at both galleries.

While the exhibitions were conceived as overviews of Polke’s cosmos as a photographer, the accompanying catalogue provides ample further materials. Next to a prolific essay by Siegfried Gohr, it includes no less than seven interviews with contemporaries of the artist. These conversations with companions, friends, curators, collectors, critics and his family relate to Polke’s photographic oeuvre for the most part. The interviewees share personal experiences, tell anecdotes, recall memorable encounters and allow insight into their correspondence from that time. Interviewees are: Mariette Althaus, former partner of Sigmar Polke; Bice Curiger, art scholar, critic, curator and publisher; Josef Froehlich, collector and entrepreneur; Erhard Klein, gallery owner; Christof Kohlhöfer, artist; Anna Polke, daughter of Sigmar Polke; Reiner Speck, physician, publicist and collector.

Featuring reproductions of 62 works by Sigmar Polke, this catalogue spans four decades of photographic work by the artist. All artworks are accompanied by work details including provenance, literature and exhibition history. A small number of historical newspaper articles is also reprinted here for further reference.
