We are the stars which sing
We sing with our light
We are the birds of fire
We fly over the sky.
Our light is a voice
We make a road for spirits,
For the spirits to pass over.

About
About
Özlem Altın approaches her artistic practice with an animistic understanding, seeing bodies,
pictures, and materials as alive and interconnected. Working across painting, collage,
photography, and artist books, she creates layered visual constellations that explore
transformation, permeability, and states of in-betweenness.
Her process draws on a growing archive of found and original imagery. Through photomontage,
ink, oil paint, and gestural mark making, Altın assembles fragments into layered compositions
where figure and abstraction, surface and depth interweave. Recurring motifs such as masks,
mermaids, and herons point to hybrid forms and symbolic thresholds. These elements give rise
to intimate, at times mythic, narratives of embodiment and perception.
Özlem Altın’s work has been presented in The Milk of Dreams, 59th Venice Biennale (2022); Companion Pieces, MoMA, New York (2020); the 16th Istanbul Biennial (2019); and the 10th Berlin Biennial (2018), among others. In 2020 she received the Villa Romana Prize. In 2024, she was awarded the Hannah-Höch-Förderpreis, including a solo exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie, as well as the Tiemann Prize.
Özlem Altın holds an MFA from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam (2006). From 2020 to 2021,
she held a visiting professorship in photography at HGB Leipzig and in 2023 led the Visiting
Artist Studio at UMPRUM Academy in Prague. She lives and works in Berlin.

The edition Our Light is a Voice (Inversion), 2025, portrays a figure surrounded by phantom-like figures, captured in a moment of immanence. The photograph, originally transferred to negative for painting, reappears in positive in this edition. It was created several years ago in collaboration with Ali during a nude photo shoot in Berlin.
