About

João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva: Abyssology. For a transitory science of the indiscernible was published on the occasion of their exhibition at the Coordoaria Nacional de Lisboa in 2012.

The artists not only left a testimony in this book, whose true and essential value lies in the collection of texts in its index, they also illustrated it in colour with their work, along with many other rare images. This then is an apposite moment also to remind ourselves of the abyssological dedication of deceased authors who posthumously and for legal reasons left us the use of their literary heritage.

The publication includes essays by Victor Hugo, João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva, René Daumal, Michel de Montaigne, Nuno Faria, Mattia Denisse, William A. Cassidy, Michel Siffre, G. I. Gurdiieff, Rui Chafes, M. Robert-Houdin, Master Baffon, João Urbano and Jorge Leandro Rosa.

João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva

João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva

João Maria Gusmão (b. 1979 in Lisbon) and Pedro Paiva (b. 177 in Lisbon) have collaborated from 2001 till 2018 to produce films, objects, photographs, installations, and publications that question the boundaries of perception and address paradoxical situations within existential metaphysics. Subsequently, João Maria Gusmão has continued on his own to create a multidisciplinary body of work that is at once humorous, enigmatic, and absurd, containing references to literature and philosophy, yet primarily drawing attention to questions of reality and its representation. The artist lives in Lisbon.
