Conceptual artist Julian Charrière bridges the realms of environmental science and cultural history. His projects often stem from fieldwork in remote locations with acute geophysical identities. Charrière’s work here traces the historical and geographical path between Mount Tambora in Indonesia, which erupted in 1815, and the Alps. It follows the entangled threads of climate devastation, monocultural farming, and an imaginary in which apocalyptic ecological threats find poetic utterance in the aesthetic of the sublime.

This publication documents the dystopic installations of the work at Kunsthalle Mainz, on Mauvoisin Dam, and at Musée de Bagnes.

Julian Charrière

Julian Charrière (b. 1987 in Morgens) is a French-Swiss artist who investigates the relationship between human civilization and the natural landscape in his conceptual body of work. His artistic practice includes working in remote places with acute geophysical identities such as volcanos, ice-fields, or radioactive sites. Charrière’s research-based art work varies between photography, performance, intervention, and sculpture. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
