The phrase How Long Is Forgotten? shouldn’t just be read as a pleasantly poetic twist, but also as a supervision of the conventional logic of time. The entanglement of simple past and participle produces a glitch that turns an inconspicuous question into a grammatical time warp; the message between the lines (and the times) is that past and present, forgetting and remembering, origin and utopia – in Bottrop’s images and in general – unfold according to their own incalculable dynamics.

Alongside images of his artworks, this publication features an essay by Anna Sinofzik that examines Bottrop’s practice and its attachment to the decline of the mining industry and its relics. Additionally, the publication is accompanied by three image booklets.

Peppi Bottrop

Peppi Bottrop (*1986 in Bottrop) is known for his abstract charcoal paintings that reference the history of industrial urban landscapes and societies in Western Germany. The artist was raised in Bottrop – a city in the Ruhr region known for its former coal mining industry – and uses his own past as the backdrop for his intuitive and sensitive large-scale works on canvas. In his work, Bottrop creates impressive correlations between architecture, space, gesture, and subjectivity. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.
