About

Henning Strassburger: MIAE was published on the occasion of the exhibition [MIAE] Meditation is an Emergency at Neue Galerie Gladbeck in 2017.

Strassburger is known for his visual language of expressive marks, strokes and recurring motifs. In his paintings he explores the position of manual painting in today’s digitally overloaded society. In Gladbeck he presents 10 paintings, each based on two charcoal drawings of celebrities in scandalous kissing scenes - Justin Bieber, Madonna, Britney Spears - as well as four small paintings of teen magazine covers .

Alongside installation shots, images of the art works and photographs by Henning Strassburger, the publication features an essay by Jeni Fulton and an interview between Henning Strassburger and Christian Malycha.

Henning Strassburger

Henning Strassburger (b. 1983 in Meissen) is a German painter who explores the position of manual painting in today's digitally overloaded society. His visual language of expressive marks, strokes and recurring motifs appear gestural, but are on closer inspection predetermined. Strassburger’s seemingly spontaneous aesthetic belies a meticulous and pre-planned practice where themes and motifs unfurl across series and over time. The artist lives and works in Berlin and Zurich.
