About

Jonathan Messe: Dr. Zuhause: K.UN.S.T. (Erzliebe) is a monograph published on the occasion of Meese's seminal exhibition project of the same title in Lübeck in 2019.

The artist has conceived the "Gesamtkunstwerk Lübeck," which he regards as an evolutionary beginning, through which he intends art to be given a decisive influence on society. Divided into various sub-themes, a total of five Lübeck institutions, to each of which a family member and keyword is assigned, are the venues for the display of Meese's multifaceted works.

Jonathan Meese dedicates himself to the theme of 'home' in its broadest sense, in referring to migration and a newly emerging nationalism. Meese aims to replace the current social system with a 'dictatorship of art', in order to free humankind from indoctrinated measures.

This monograph features essays on the artist by Michael Diers, Almut Linde, Antje-Britt Mählmann, Jonathan Meese, Bernd Schwarze, Jörg-Philipp Thomsa, Rosa Windt and Oliver Zybok.

Jonathan Meese

Jonathan Meese (b. 1970 in Tokyo) proclaims the autonomy of the work of art, which, removed of its purpose and detached from religious cults and secular forms of rule – and thus liberated from people – is subject to its own laws, is self-determining, is void of ideology. He treats figures, symbols and language equally, as long as they fulfill, in his opinion, their artistic function, namely aesthetic conciseness and impact. Under these premises, Meese conducts a willful appropriation and mixing of characters and motifs from high and popular culture in his paintings. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
