About

João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva: The Sleeping Hippopotamus and the Missing Eskimo was produced to accompany two exhibitions of the artist duo João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, which took place in Cologne at Kölnischer Kunstverein in 2015 and in Aarau at Aargauer Kunsthaus in 2016.

The exhibitions in Germany and in Switzerland were conceived independently from one another in terms of content, but they display certain overlaps and parallels. The exhibition The Sleeping Eskimo at Kunsthaus Aarau consists of around forty filmic works and sculptures as well as more than thirty photographic pieces.

Rather than giving an overview of the world of Gusmão and Paiva’s work as a whole, the exhibition The Missing Hippopotamus at Kölnischer Kunstverein was conceived to draw attention to a somewhat overlooked area of their work. To this end, forty-one bronze sculptures, almost the entire sculptural oeuvre of the two Portuguese artists, were presented.

The catalogue offers an extensive insight into the Portuguese artists' multilayered oeuvre. Alongside images of both exhibitions and artworks, this publication features essays by Anselm Franke, João Maria Gusmão, João Ribas and Madeleine Schuppli.

João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva

João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva

João Maria Gusmão (b. 1979 in Lisbon) and Pedro Paiva (b. 177 in Lisbon) have collaborated from 2001 till 2018 to produce films, objects, photographs, installations, and publications that question the boundaries of perception and address paradoxical situations within existential metaphysics. Subsequently, João Maria Gusmão has continued on his own to create a multidisciplinary body of work that is at once humorous, enigmatic, and absurd, containing references to literature and philosophy, yet primarily drawing attention to questions of reality and its representation. The artist lives in Lisbon.
