About

Claudia Wieser: FURNITURE was published on the occasion of her exhibition at KIOSK in Ghent in 2012. The title points directly at issues that lie at the very heart of Wieser’s work: what is the status of sculptures that were designed as objects?

The artist’s body of work is built around this question and explores the boundaries between autonomous and applied art. FURNITURE brought together an ensemble of drawings, ceramic and wooden sculptures, and a spatial collage, instigating a dialogue between them and explicitly relating them to the architectural context of the exhibition space.

The publication is accompanied by essays from Liene Aerts, Alexander García Düttmann, Zoë Gray and Wim Waelput.

Claudia Wieser

Claudia Wieser (b. 1973 in Freilassing) is known for her Modernist-inspired geometric constructions that reference Bauhaus architecture and design, spirituality, alchemy, and furniture design, with a nod to 20th century abstraction and expressionism. Trained as a blacksmith, her work is rooted in craft and functionality. Wieser always relies on her environment, takes into consideration site specificity and conceives her work with the public in mind, to provide an opportunity for escape, respite, and connection as we re-emerge into our shared world. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
